Indonesia’s black pepper exports from January to March 2022 reached US$17 million. The figure reflects a 44.05 percent year-on-year (yoy) increase from the first quarter of 2021.

The increased export value of black pepper, both ground pepper and peppercorns, came with the 10.16 percent (yoy) rise in shipment volume to 4,850 tons.

This continued the trend in Q1/2021, when the export value grew 48.8 percent (yoy) to US$11.80 million with a volume increase of 29.34 percent (yoy) to 4,400 tons.

“The increasing demand for spices, including black pepper, is due to the recovery in the world economy following the easing of the Covid-19 pandemic,” Rini Satriani, head of the Indonesia Eximbank (IEB) Division at the Institute for the Indonesian Export Financing Agency (LPEI), said in an official statement, July 12.

Rini said that the excellent competitiveness of Indonesian black peppers in the global market is an advantage for export performances, supported by the utilization of black pepper products in the food and beverage industry.

As of 2020, Lampung Province was the largest black pepper export contributor, accounting for 58.33 percent of the national export value. The LPEI sees Lampung as a potential area to increase exporters’ capacity through the ‘Black Pepper Cluster Forex Village’ program that it currently runs with the Industry Ministry.
